The Institute of Physics of Materials is an institution focused on materials research using state-of-the-art techniques and technologies in the areas of numerical calculations, simulations, experiments and imaging techniques, including the production of advanced materials with specific properties.
The IPM is an essential part of the Czech Academy of Sciences, where the institution aims to elucidate the relationship between the behaviour and properties of materials and their structural and microstructural characteristics. Priority is given to research on advanced metallic materials and metal-based composites in relation to their microstructure and method of preparation. The purpose of our research is to optimize the performance of materials and predict their service life using theoretical and computational methods supported by experiments. For these purposes, we use conventional and progressive experimental and analytical techniques, including electron microscopy. We emphasize the scientific education of our students, where most of our PhD students can work independently on electron microscopes.
