CTLS 2025 Congress: Core Facilities as the Key to Shaping the Scientific World

Date: June 10–12, 2025

Brno will welcome experts from around the world in the field of core facilities—shared laboratories and research infrastructures—in the life sciences. The CTLS 2025 Congress (Core Technologies for Life Sciences Congress) takes place every two years, and this year it is hosted in the Czech Republic by the CEITEC research center. It will focus on the latest trends in research facility management.
What are core facilities?
Core facilities are specialized laboratories and research sites that provide access to state-of-the-art technologies to various research groups or institutions worldwide. This makes projects feasible that would otherwise be financially or technically out of reach. In the Czech Republic, such facilities are run by the CEITEC research center.
The congress will offer administrators, managers, researchers, and other life science professionals a range of lectures, workshops, and discussions—above all, an opportunity to share experiences.

Among the main topics of this year’s congress are the role of core facilities in scientific institutions, innovation in research infrastructures, support for open science through collaboration, and professional development for leaders of these centers. Strengthening cooperation between industry and research infrastructures will also be a key focus.

JSALT2025: A Six-Week Workshop for Speech Technology Research

Date: June 23–August 1, 2025

Summer in Brno will also shine a spotlight on speech technologies. The international speech community will gather for the 32nd time at the JSALT (Jelinek Summer Workshop on Speech and Language Technology), focusing on speech and language processing. For over 30 years, this workshop has been organized by the Center for Language and Speech Processing at Johns Hopkins University. This year’s event in Brno is co-organized by the Speech@FIT research group from Brno University of Technology alongside Phonexia.

The workshop brings together experts from various institutions who will dedicate six weeks to intensive research in language and speech processing. The goal is to push the boundaries of what computers can do in understanding human speech, translating languages, and interacting with users. Topics include improving language models for long conversations, enhancing speech recognition in noisy environments, and creating systems that can synthesize speech even in languages with limited data. Participants’ work will result in scientific publications and new software tools and innovative technologies that make communication with computers—and one another—easier.

The program will also feature lectures, seminars, and—most importantly—a unique opportunity to form new international collaborations in artificial intelligence and speech processing. The workshop is preceded by a two-week summer school that serves as an introduction to these topics.

This year, the founder of electron microscopy in Brno, Prof. Ing. Armin Delong, DrSc., would have turned 100
This year, we commemorate two significant anniversaries at once. On January 29, Prof. Ing. Armin Delong, DrSc., would have celebrated his 100th birthday, and it has been exactly 100 years since the dawn of electron microscopy in our country. Join us in celebrating the scientific tradition in Brno that has propelled the city among the world’s “microscopy capitals”.
